After a steady decline in Covid cases last week, there has been sharp rise in cases since Thursday and concerned health officials have stepped up efforts to create awareness in the taluka.
According to health sources, Covid cases had been on the decline last week and the daily detection of cases had even dropped to single digits, with six new cases being detected on Tuesday and the active cases dropped to 91.
However, cases began to rise sharply on Thursday (22), Friday (30) and Saturday (13), with the active cases rising to 125 as on Saturday.
According to Canacona Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares, people should not forget the need for restrictions and should continue taking precautionary measures to avoid the infection.
On Saturday, Dr Tavares and two other medical staff undertook a house-to-house survey of contacts of Covid patients at Mudcheli (Agonda) and Saleri (Khola), where a few more cases were detected in recent days.
The health team also visited a fish selling point where fisherfolk from Saleri sell fish near the Saleri bridge and called them along with the few others who came in contact with positive patients for tests at CHC on Sunday.
“Due to rising cases, we conducted this survey so that we can prevent further rise in cases. By doing more tests and by following Covid appropriate behaviour, we will be able to stop further spread of the disease,” said Dr Tavares.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes also expressed concern over a sharp rise in cases and appealed to the people not to lower their guard.
“I appeal to people to observe maximum precautions while following Covid SOP guidelines. People should also come forward to take the vaccination during the ongoing drive,” said Fernandes.
