Covid takes 58 more lives as toll crosses 2000-mark

Goa witnessed a jump of 43,490 new Covid cases since May 1. Parallelly, 888 Covid patients succumbed to the infection in the first 15 days of this month. 

The Directorate of Health Services on Saturday recorded 58 more Covid-related deaths and 1,957 new cases of the infection from among 5,571 samples tested in the last 24 hours. The daily positivity rate stood at 35.1 per cent.

The total Covid fatalities in the state have risen to 2,056.

The state’s medical infrastructure is still struggling to manage a mountain of 30,774 active Covid cases and the total confirmed cases have touched 1.34 lakh.

Of the 58 Covid deaths, 33 occurred at Goa Medical College and Hospital, 18 at South Goa District Hospital, three at a South Goa private hospital, three at North Goa District Hospital where one of the patients was brought dead and one at a North Goa private hospital.

Nine patients passed away within 24 hours of being admitted at the hospital.

A total of 17 deceased did not suffer from any prior comorbidities.

Meanwhile, despite the reassurance from the state government, Goa, along with Puducherry, remains perched at the top of the list of states with the highest average weekly positivity rate in the country.

Between May 8 and May 14 Goa recorded a weekly average positivity rate of 42 per cent while Puducherry recorded 42.3 per cent.
