MARGAO
Gloom, fear and anxiety descended on the city here on Sunday as citizens woke up to hear the shocking news of the demise of the husband of Model Margao candidate Sandra Fernandes because of Covid.
Even as Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat took to social media to announce the sad news, reports did the rounds that another candidate, who had contested the just-concluded Margao civic polls, has tested positive for Coronavirus.
Earlier, candidate from ward 7, Arthur D’Silva, had reportedly tested positive for Covid and had to face an FIR for campaigning and soliciting votes despite his positive status.
The Opposition leader said he was devastated by the sudden passing away of his friend Mathew Fernandes, husband of Sandra, Model Margao candidate from ward no 20. “He had always worked for the welfare of others. My condolences to his wife Sandra and family. May his soul rest in peace”, Kamat said.
Kamat said that Mathew was admitted to a private hospital after he was gasping for breath late night after the April 23 polling. He died after a cardiac arrest in the early morning of Sunday, he said.
The sad episode has only confirmed fears that Covid may hit the city in a big way after the hectic fortnight-long campaigning for the Margao civic election. Presently two candidates are undergoing treatment for Covid. Besides, their family members have also tested positive.
Information suggests that many families in both Margao and Fatorda have been infected amid a surge in cases across he commercial town.
