Crackdown fails to stop stone quarries in Sattari

Crackdown fails to stop stone quarries in Sattari

VALPOI

Efforts by authorities have failed to stop stone quarries from illegally operating in parts of Sattari.

According to sources, officers from the mining department had raided two laterite stone quarries at Pissurlem about 10 days ago and had seized machinery at the site. Authorities had also recommended the filing of a complaint against the landlord.

However, residents have been surprised to find that quarry activities have resumed in Pissurlem despite the crackdown, leading many to wonder if the quarry operators are willing to take a risk or if they have no fear of authorities, given their links to politicians or officials.

Stone quarrying activities have been a constant nuisance for locals and several complaints have been filed in the past, but little has been done to permanently stop the activity in parts of Sattari.

When contacted, Pissurlem sarpanch Devanand Parab voiced displeasure over the failure of authorities to find a permanent solution to stop stone quarrying operations in the village.

“Complaints have been filed with the Sattari SDM, police station and other authorities, but there has been no permanent action other than sporadic raids,” said Parab.
