The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) along with the police took strict action against the illegal wholesale fish market operating in Kharewaddo-Vasco on Monday, following complaints from local traditional fisherfolk.
The long-standing issue of wholesalers selling fish on the roadside has created a rift between the two groups, with traditional fisherfolk claiming that their livelihoods are being adversely affected.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said several attempts were made requesting fish wholesalers to close the sale of fish by the roadside along the Kharewaddo belt.
“We have repeatedly requested the wholesalers not to sell fish in the area, as it impacts the business of our traditional fisherfolk. Despite multiple appeals, the illegal activity has continued, leaving us no choice but to take firm action,” said Borker.
Borker added that the wholesalers have been pushing for designated time slots to conduct their business legally.
"Some of the wholesalers have slots in the Vasco new fish market and they can always choose to sell fish from the new Vasco fish market. The wholesalers have requested us to give them time of two hours in the evening to sell fresh fish when their boats arrive with the fresh catch but that is dependent on the Vasco fish market vendors who have objected to their business operations,” said Borker.
"However, selling fish on the roadside is a violation of municipal regulations, and the authorities have made it clear that they will no longer tolerate such activities. If the wholesalers do not listen despite repeated warnings, we will have to take strict measures against them." Borker warned.
