Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar has directed officials of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) to expedite renovation work of new jetty at Malim Jetty.
Halarnkar was speaking after he along with GSIDC officials visited the Malim Jetty on Monday, as part of efforts to improve fisheries infrastructure at all the major jetties in the State.
During his inspection, the minister directed the officials to take all the pending works forward. Office bearers of Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society were present on the occasion.
Speaking to ‘The Goan’, Halarnkar stated that Malim Jetty is one of the important jetties in the State and the main purpose of his visit was to inspect the status of the renovation work of the new jetty.
“Several contractors have abandoned the work midway as a result of which the work of the Jetty could not be completed as yet. There has been persistent demand from office bearers of the Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society that trawler owners are facing lot of inconveniences in the absence of a proper jetty,” said Halarnkar.
“I have now directed GSIDC officials to complete renovation work of the new jetty as early as possible,” said the minister.
Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Cooperative Society Vice Chairman Harsha Dhond said their society had invited the minister to conduct an inspection of the Malim Jetty.
“The renovation work of the new Malim jetty has been completed to the extent of only 35% and the balance 65% work is still incomplete. This work is going on for the last 12 years and more than 10 contractors have abandoned this work midway,” said Dhond.
“Since the last 3 years, work has come to a standstill. The minister has understood the problems being faced by boat owners and has directed officials of GSIDC to restart the work within the next 15 days and complete the project as early as possible,” said Dhond.
