The Front also took strong exception to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s tweet thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and welcoming the decision to establish the Mhadei Water Management Authority.
Addressing the media, member of the Front Prashant Naik said the fact that Karnataka Chief Minister B S Bomai has also welcomed the Union Cabinet’s decision shows that Karnataka is confident that Mhadei river water will be finally diverted to the neighbouring state after the establishment of the Authority.
He demanded to know how the Union Cabinet can set up the Authority when Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra have challenged the Mhadei river water tribunal award. “We do not know the basis on which our Chief Minister has welcomed the decision. Just a fortnight ago, the Chief Minister had led a delegation from Goa to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to withdraw the DPR. The Chief Minister should now explain to Goans what happens to the demand of the government for the withdrawal of the DPR,” Naik said while asserting that the creation of the Mhadei Water Management Authority is an official license to set in motion the process for the diversion of the Mhadei waters to Karnataka.
Saying the Union Cabinet’s decision is another defeat for Goa in the Mhadei river dispute, Naik only hoped the government wakes up from slumber and listen to the views of people such as Rajendra Kerkar and the Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan and take steps to save Mhadei.
“It is time for the Goa government to again move the Supreme Court on Mhadei so that Goa gets some relief from the Apex Court on the matter,” he added.
Save Mhadei, Save Goa Salcete convenor Serafino Cota said Goa seemed to have landed from the frying pan to the fire in the wake of the Union Cabinet’s decision to constitute the Mhadei Water Management Authority.
Adv. Pratima Coutinho has slammed the Goa government and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for welcoming the Union Cabinet’s decision, accusing the BJP government of fooling the people of Goa.
