Dr Edmund Rodrigues, the suspended head of Goa Medical College’s Forensics and Toxicology department, appeared before the Crime Branch on Wednesday with an interim relief from the court along with his lawyer.
Dr Rodrigues was quizzed by the Investigation Officer for five hours in connection with the case of the bloomer by the department in which staff swapped the body of 24-year-old Januz Pavel Gonsalves with the unclaimed corpse of 45-year-old Vishant Naik, and routinely disposed it. Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Kartik Kashyap said Dr Rodrigues was questioned from 2.30 pm to around 7 pm. He said, the interrogation of other officials of the forensic department will be conducted on Thursday.
The body of Gonsalves, a footballer who died after he collapsed on the field while playing at Aldona, was discovered to be missing much to the shock and horror of his kin who had gone to the Goa Medical College mortuary last Saturday morning to receive the mortal remains for the funeral services slated for that afternoon.
The incident had instantly sent shock waves across the State with news of the incident going viral across social media platforms and local television news channels.
Both the family as well as the GMC Dean had lodged complaints in connection with the incident with the Agassaim police who booked the FIR. The case was subsequently transferred to the Crime Branch by an order issued by the DGP.
