The CMC Chief Officer has launched an exercise across the Municipal area to recover a staggering Rs 60-odd lakh arrears from the households due since 2021. The CMC has already issued over 800 notices on the households for recovery of the sanitation tax arrears.
A delegation of citizens, who called on the Chief Officer, pointed out that the ongoing drive will overburden the households and hence made a plea to keep the recovery drive on hold.
The delegation requested the Chief Officer that since the CMC is soon going to the polls, the issue should be kept on hold and allow the new Council to take a decision on the recovery of arrears.
The Chief Officer gave a patient hearing to the delegation and explained that the civic body has initiated the sanitation tax arrears after the Audit flagged the loss of revenue amounting to Rs 60-odd lakh since 2021.
The Chief Officer pointed out that the civic body has received communication from the Director of Municipal Administration to initiate the recovery proceedings as per the Audit recommendations.
The matter pertains to a 2021 Council resolution wherein it was not to implement the new garbage fee rate on the households in view of the Covid pandemic.
