MARGAO
Power consumers in South Goa have been alerted to a scheduled shutdown on Sunday, April 12, 2026, as the Electricity Department undertakes annual maintenance of key infrastructure.
The shutdown will cover 220 kV EHV substations at Xeldem and Cuncolim, the 110 kV substation at Verna, along with 220 kV interstate and intrastate transmission lines. Power supply will remain suspended from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The nine-hour outage is expected to impact large parts of the district, with no electricity supply during this period in the talukas of Salcete, Canacona, Sanguem, Quepem and Mormugao, as well as parts of Dharbandora taluka”including V.P. Kirlapal-Dabal, Shigao-Collem and Mollem”and areas of Ponda taluka such as V.P. Panchawadi and the Salaulim Water Works at Xelpem.
However, areas including Raia, Curtorim, Loutolim and Macazana in Salcete are expected to remain unaffected.
Authorities have also cautioned that water supply across the district may be disrupted due to the shutdown.
Officials from the Water Supply Department are in discussions with the Electricity Department to explore the possibility of arranging alternate power to operate select pumps at the Selaulim water treatment plant.
A senior water supply official said efforts are underway to ensure minimal disruption, but acknowledged the challenges posed by the outage.
While the Public Works Department attempts to regulate supply during such situations using master balancing reservoirs and overhead tanks, the existing infrastructure often falls short of meeting rising demand, particularly in urban areas.
