OLD GOA
Even as some fruit vendors were evicted from their relocated place outside the GMC complex based on a High Court order, the Curca panchayat has come out strongly in support of them and have decided to file a review plea in the case to get justice for them.
Speaking to the reporters, Curca Deputy Sarpanch Marvin Gonsalves said it is wrong to displace the poor fruit vendors and rehabilitate the Deendayal kiosk owners.
“The government could have told the HC that this place is already occupied by the fruit vendors and could have suggested some other place for rehabilitation for the Deendayal kiosk owners,” Gonsalves stated.
“Our panchayat has resolved to file a review petition in the High Court to help the vendors and tell the court that this place was not vacant as submitted by the government. This place was not vacant as fruit vendors were doing business here,” Gonsalves said.
Panch Gautam Naik said the fruit vendors were relocated after informing the collector, deputy collector and on directions of the chief minister.
“Later, a plan was also being worked out for rehabilitation of all those affected in the demolition drive, including the Deendayal kiosk owners,” Naik stated.
“When the Deendayal kiosk owners approached the HC, it was the responsibility of the AG to inform that the place where they were asking for rehabilitation is already occupied by the fruit vendors. But, the government failed to do so due to which a total mess is being created and now there is a divide among the vendors,” Naik added and stated that whatever has happened is wrong.
Curca Sarpanch Verodiana D’Sozua was also present.
Govt will file review, VP cannot: MLA
OLD GOA: St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes conceded that it was wrong on the part of the government authorities to demolish the Deendayal kiosk owners.
“When they had all documents and approvals, authorities should not have demolished their kiosks. It was a mistake on the part of authorities. They should have first checked the documents and approvals,” Fernandes told reporters.
Fernandes also said he would demand with the government to file a review petition in the case.
“We should have been kept in the loop. I will request the CM to file a review petition in the case,” he added.
When pointed out that the Curca panchayat has decided to file a review petition, Fernandes said that according to his knowledge, a panchayat cannot file a review petition. “It is the government which has to file the review petition,” he stated.
