PANAJI: The butterfly garden in front of the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council has allegedly turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising concerns over the spread of dengue and malaria in the area.
Goa Forward Party joint secretary Dattaraj Dessai has taken up the issue and initiated cleaning of the premises to remove stagnant water and mosquito breeding spots. “In August, 71 cases were recorded. The MLA has turned a blind eye to the matter. Mosquito larvae are everywhere,” alleged Dessai.
In the first 10 days of August, the hospital laboratory has reportedly detected 71 positive dengue cases, with 27 patients admitted. Health officials have expressed concern as the figures have been recorded within just 10 days of the month.
Mosquito larvae were reportedly found in water stored in a tank at the garden. Stagnant and foul-smelling water was also noticed in the carrier of a municipal council truck parked on the premises.
With dengue cases on the rise, residents are concerned about the situation, particularly as children regularly use the nearby play area.
