The first day of the 15-day curfew imposed by the State government to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic evoked good response in Bardez including the coastal villages of Calangute-Candolim and Anjuna on Sunday.
The curfew brought life to a halt barring the essential services.
The fish and vegetable markets in Mapusa which otherwise are buzzing even on Sundays were completely shut.
A few grocery shops were open but had very few customers due to restrictions on the movement of the public.
Several pharmacies that were open saw people queuing up to buy medical supplies.
Although the Covid-19 testing and vaccination drives were going on at all the centres very few people were present.
Mapusa Police made its presence felt at the entrance of the town and kept a tight vigil on motorists zooming around since 7 in the morning.
Apart from some private four-wheelers and two-wheelers in the first half of the day, public transport including motorcycle pilots was off the road.
Mapusa Police have not registered any offences on day one of the curfew.
“There was no much traffic or movement on the road today probably because it was a Sunday. We expect a little more movement tomorrow (Monday) as people have to attend to work,” a senior police official said.
Coastal villages of Calangute, Candolim and Anjuna were much quieter with people preferring to remain indoors.
While the shops and restaurants along the coast remained shut beaches wore a deserted look throughout the day.
