With just 10 days to go for the new fishing season to commence, the Cutbona fishing jetty, the major fishing hub in the state, is in darkness for want of proper illumination.
That’s not all. Boat owners have pointed out that the non-functional street lights have facilitated thieves and miscreants to target the fishing boats anchored at the jetty under the cover of darkness.
Former President of the Cutbona Boat Owners Union Cyprinao Cardozo pointed out that the streets lights at the jetty has not been functioning for a long time now.
“This situation has created a conducive atmosphere for thieves to strike at the fishing boats anchored at the jetty”, he said.
Another former Union President Savio D’Silva said miscreants, besides petty thieves, have been playing mischief at the jetty.
“The boat owners have been demanding CCTV cameras and street light illumination to keep miscreants at bay, but in vain. We find it difficult to accept how thefts at the jetty are taking place when the Fisheries has deployed security personnel at the Cutbona jetty”, he said.
Boat owners have demanded that the government and the Fisheries department restore the illumination at Cutbona fishing jetty by repairing the street lights on priority before the commencement of the new fishing season.
