Cyclone 'Tauktae' batters Canacona coast

CANACONA

Cyclone Tauktae battered the Canacona coast damaging several structures and trees along the shore on Saturday.

Strong waves pounded the coast and seawater even entered several houses along the coast.

The Maxem creek was overflowing and seawater entered the Galgibaga coast, submerging the island between Maxem creek and Galgibaga beach coast.

The situation was no different at the neighbouring Talpona coast, which was also battered by strong waves which led to seawater flooding the Talpona river and causing heavy sand erosion on beach coasts of Talpona and Rajbagh-Tarir on either side of the river mouth.

The strong waves damaged retaining walls and compounds along the coast, reached the steps at the entrance of Palolem main beach and entered the street.

The sea caused heavy sand erosion at Agonda beach, submerging the Olive Ridley Turtle pits and damaging the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Agonda.
