Cyclone Tauktae left a trail of disaster and heavy rains coupled with fierce winds damaged electricity poles and snapped power lines leaving the whole of Bardez without electricity for the entire Sunday and with slim chances of resuming supply.

One person died after a coconut tree came crashing down on her in Anjuna.

Falling trees, blocked roads and snapped electricity lines left the district administration inundated with SOS calls from several parts of the taluka.

Calangute and Candolim bore the brunt of the cyclonic storm as trees fell like nine pins along the coastal villages, disrupting normal life.

Fire personnel and officials of the electricity department were on their toes trying their best to clear the roads and restore snapped power lines.

In an unfortunate incident, a 34-year-old woman from Mazilwaddo-Anjuna was killed after a coconut tree fell on her in the first half of the day.

The woman reportedly went to fetch water from a well behind her house, when the tree came crashing down on her.

In another incident, a young boy was injured after a part of a house wall collapsed on him at Corjuem-Aldona. He was rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

Several trees came crashing down in the coastal villages of Calangute and Candolim, blocking the main roads.

With fire personnel unable to attend to every call, panchayat members were seen making arrangements to clear the main road on priority.

Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins informed that the main Calangute-Baga road was without obstruction, but most of the roads in Naikawaddo were blocked.

“Our top priority is to clear the main roads. We are working hard with limited resources at our disposal,” Martins said.

The Baga creek was swollen with water, damaging several boats and canoes docked along the creek.

“The level of water rose substantially along the Baga creek. The water broke the embankment and came right up to the Holy Cross and some water entered into the fields,” Martins informed.

Reports of trees falling and snapping of power lines also came in from Aldona, Siolim, Tivim and other areas.
