The Dabolim section of the ongoing flyover project will be "fully cleared" and thrown open to public traffic by December 15, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said on Tuesday.
Godinho, along with officials from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), the Traffic Department and other authorities, conducted a site inspection of the ongoing Dabolim flyover construction works on Tuesday afternoon. The inspection was carried out to assess the progress of the project, address traffic bottlenecks caused by the construction and ensure coordination between the executing contractor and traffic enforcement authorities.
Godinho said he was satisfied with the pace of execution while stressing the importance of adhering to the December 15 deadline to ease traffic issues near the airport corridor.
Addressing local heritage and community concerns, Godinho said the contractor had been instructed to build a proper, full-fledged Dattatraya temple for local residents. The move follows the relocation of the traditional Datta Ghumti during the initial earthmoving and structural works of the flyover project.
The Minister said the new temple would be constructed with due reverence and handed over to the community on December 15, six days ahead of the temple Vardhapan Diwas on December 21.
Godinho also announced plans to utilise the vacant spaces beneath the elevated flyover structure. The space under the flyover will be developed into a sports and recreation area for the local neighbourhood, with a dedicated futsal ground and a landscaped community park.
“The space under the flyover will be completely beautified and put to positive public use,” Godinho stated, noting that the inclusion of sports amenities like a futsal court will provide local youth with a safe, designated area for recreational activities.
Traffic officials and RTO personnel present during the site visit were instructed to ensure smooth diversion plans for the movement of traffic in the interim weeks leading up to the December 15 opening to prevent traffic jams along the busy stretch.
