Students of Keshav Smruti High School Dabolim had a hands-on experience in paddy farming at the sprawling Tolleaband water body in Benaulim on Thursday.
While the students joined the sowing operations, they also witnessed mechanical transplantation of paddy in the fields.
Benaulim farmer Raymond D’Costa said the farmers were happy to play host to the young students to witness how farming is being carried out both manually and via mechanisation.
“Our ancestors have been cultivating these fields over the decades. We have kept the traditional of our ancestors alive. We are happy that the school students have come to gain experience in farming. The youth is the future of our country and I hope they will take agriculture forward”, he said.
Progressive farmer Claudius Dias, who cultivates fields opposite the Margao railway station also joined the farmers in educating the school students on farming.
He stressed the need to keep agriculture alive to meet the food requirements as well as to protect the environment and ecology.
The students narrated their rich experience of descending in the fields and having a hands-on experience in farming activity.
