Multi-sector entrepreneur and writer Datta Naik has resigned from the Konkani Bhasha Mandal following the controversy over an article on Shenoi Goenbab published in Jaaag, a Konkani periodical.
Naik, who was a primary member of the Mandal, sent his resignation via WhatsApp and email to current KBM president Serafin Cotta. He also withdrew the remaining portion of the Rs one-crore donation he had pledged for the promotion of Konkani.
The Konkani Bhasha Mandal and the All India Konkani Parishad had objected to Naik’s article, issuing a joint press note raising concerns over its content.
Naik expressed strong displeasure at the statement, alleging that both organisations were acting under the influence of a single individual. He said the joint release had shocked him and accused the bodies of undermining independent thought.
The resignation has sparked debate in literary circles, with writers and cultural activists discussing its implications.
Naik had some time ago announced a Rs one-crore contribution to support Konkani language initiatives, of which he has already given more than Rs 25 lakh.
In his resignation letter, he made it clear that the balance amount would not be released.
Confirming the development, Mandal president Serafin Cotta said Naik’s resignation had been received through message and by mail.
He acknowledged that the organisation had already benefited from part of Naik’s donation.
Cotta added that Mandal office‑bearers would meet Naik to discuss and resolve the matter related to the controversy surrounding his article.
The episode highlights tensions within Konkani literary institutions and raises questions about the handling of dissent. Naik’s exit and withdrawal of funds mark a significant setback for the KBM which is actively involved holding language promoting programmes, including running a Konkani school in Margao – Ravindra Kelekar Dnyanmandir High School.
