Even as the Congress candidates shortlisted by the party for the Zilla Panchayat seats in Salcete are all expected to file their nomination papers on Wednesday, the party leadership is still in a consultation mode to finalise the candidates for the Davorlim and Guirdolim ZP seats.
The seven candidates, whose names were cleared by the party President Girish Chodankar a day ago, were all given the B forms at the South Goa district office at the hands of GPCC general secretary Altinho Gomes in the presence of district President Joe Dias, vice-president Deepak Kharangate, party leader Everson Vales and others. The Curtorim candidate Michelle Rebello filed her papers on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition, Digambar Kamat said the party will take a decision by Wednesday morning on the party candidate for the two seats of Davorlim and Guirdolim. “The party leadership is consulting with the party leaders in the two constituencies. The party will come out with good candidates capable of winning the seats,” he said.
In Davorlim, the party leadership is believed to have left it to the local MLA Luizinho Faleiro to finalise the candidate after taking all factors into account. Though South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Sunday had recommended the name of K Murtuza for the Davorlim seat, sources say the party leadership
will finalise the candidate only after taking the local MLA and other factors into confidence.
As far as the Guirdolim seat is concerned, while the South Goa district committee had recommended the name of former Guirdolim sarpanch Sonia Fernandes for the ticket, sources said a senior leader has been rooting for the candidature of Rasika Naik, wife of former Balli sarpanch Rohidas Naik.
