The native of Bihar, who has been accused of vandalising the flower vases in front of the Holy Spirit Church, Margao, late Sunday, has been booked for hurting the religious sentiments of the people.

The action by the Fatorda police came after the Holy Spirit Parish Priest, Fr Amandio Valladares, lodged his complaint with the police after midnight that an unknown accused person damaged the flower vases which were kept in the premises of Holy Spirit Church, causing loss to the tune of Rs 25,000, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of the Christian community.

Accordingly, the police have registered an offence under sections 295 and 427 of the IPC.

Fatorda Police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak, informed that preliminary inquiry has revealed that the name of the accused is Vijay Gupta, aged 28 years, and hailing from Bihar.

“Our inquiries have revealed that the accused is a daily wage labourer and has no fixed place of residence. He stays anywhere around and is found behind the Margao Municipal Council building to seek daily wage work”, PI Kapil said, adding that the daily wage workers are normally patronized by people for minor works.

Replying to a question, PI Kapil said since the accused is presently convalescing at the Hospicio hospital with a fractured leg, which he sustained after he met with an accident on the road at Old market after the incident, the police could not interrogate him in detail.

Meanwhile, the Fatorda police made their presence felt at the Holy Spirit Church on Monday evening. A police jeep attached to the Fatorda Police station was stationed inside the compound of the Holy Spirit Church on Monday evening as a precautionary measure.
