The PWD had recently completed the hotmixing of the NH66 highway from Gulem to Cuncolim and in most places, the height of the road has risen following the fresh hotmix.
PWD had taken-up soling of the roadside to level the difference from the Barcem side of Karmalghat. Following the fatal accident involving an inter-state luxury bus and a 2-wheeler, the PWD began soling the roadside at Gulem, the site of the accident, from Wednesday.
Following mishaps along the narrow Gulem section of the NH66 highway including the accident-prone sharp curve at Karmalghat, residents and activists have blamed authorities for their failure to take corrective measures along the route.
A PWD (Highways) source informed that ongoing works were being carried out in the Karmalghat section.
“However, following the major accident on Tuesday, we have decided to first complete the soling and remove the level difference of the NH66 road at Gulem. Incidentally, we are able to do it (fill up the level difference) only on one side of the highway. This is not new, but part of the hotmix works which are being completed."
The same source said the removal of level-difference and soling of the entire route (narrow NH-66 Gulem section) will be taken up as part of the approved finances (Rs 3.82 crore) which includes road-widening, levelling from Gulem to Karmalghat and widening of the sharp and treacherous accident-prone curve at Karmalghat.
