A 51-year-old man from Belagavi, who was declared brain dead, has given life to four persons even after his death.

The family of Umesh Basavanni Dandagi consented to donate vital organs like liver, kidneys and heart, giving a new lease of life to needy patients.

As the organs have to be transplanted to needy patients within six hours after it is retrieved ethically from the body of the deceased following all guidelines and norms, Belagavi police created a green corridor for the transportation of organs to Belagavi airport and Hubballi.

The heart was used at KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore hospital for the transplant to a needy patient, the liver was sent to Bengaluru and one kidney to each was sent to SDM Hospital, Dharwad and Tatvadarshi Hospital, Hubbballi.

“It is heartening to see many people from different walks of life are coming forward to donate organs, which in turn is saving lives of more and more critically ill people,” said a KLES official.

The KLES hospital has appealed to people to cooperate with authorities while ambulances carrying these organs are heading towards their destinations.
