Irate residents took potshots at various authorities, including the health department for not responding quickly to take stock of the situation. The carcass of the monkey was finally taken away by a forest team led by Range Forest Officer, Siddesh Gawde.
The RFO, however, ruled out the possibility of conducting post mortem examination of the carcass
since the monkey was found in a highly decomposed state, with maggots surrounding the body.
Though the post mortem examination would have unraveled the exact cause of death, the RFO, however, said that the monkey could have died of a snake bite.
“When we examined the carcass, the body had almost turned black. There was a wound mark on the body, suggesting that the monkey might have died because of a snake bite. It appears that the monkey must have been hanging on the tree for at least 3-4 days,” Gawde told The Goan.
Local residents pointed out none of the authorities responded to their call when the monkey was first noticed hanging on the cotton tree. A local resident Shobha Tulaskar pointed out the residents had been frantically trying to call the Margao municipal officials, besides health, but lamented that none of the agencies rushed to the spot. “When the residents were hit by the KFD scare, no agency, including health and civic officials, rushed to the area. They ought to have come and reassured the residents,” she pointed out.
