Delay in registration of new birth/death records causing hardships: NGO

MARGAO

The delay in registration of  new birth/death records by the Margao Municipal Council is causing  immense hardships to the public, Shadow Council for Margao claimed on  Saturday.

While highlighting the over 2 months delay in registration  of new Birth/Death records, the SCM demanded that the Council spare some  time to realise the hardships faced by the public.

SCM convener  Savio Coutinho stated that there is a huge backlog pending for the  registration of birth/death records as the events of birth/death taken  place since March 2019 stand pending for registration and issue of  certificates to the concerned.

“On account of the delay in  registration and issue of the Birth/Death certificate, Catholic parents  are forced to delay the baptism of their child. So also parents of the girl child born to them cannot submit the requisite birth certificate to  avail the scheme for the girl child which needs to be submitted within  one month of the birth,” he claimed.

Similar is the case of death  registration delays. “Death of senior citizens who were drawing  pension needs to be notified so as to stop the pension, failure of which  amounts to criminal offence. Death certificates are also required for  various property and bank matters and delay in issue of the same is  putting the kin of the deceased in great inconvenience,” Coutinho said.

“We  have observed that those who approach the higher authorities get their  registration/issue of certificate completed out of turn, while those who  have no accessibility to the higher authorities have to wait  patiently. “SCM wonders if this situation is deliberately made to  continue so that public should approach the higher authorities and the  authorities in turn show as if a favour is being done by issuing the  much needed certificate,” Coutinho said.
