Legendary Goan musician Chris Perry was on Saturday honoured for his contribution to music as the Margao Municipal Council named the road behind the Holy Spirit Church, Margao after him in the presence of eminent personalities in the field of music - Louis Banks, Braz Gonsalves, Chris Perry’s son Glen and others.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai took the opportunity to declare that the heritage festival will be a calendar event near Chris Perry’s house behind the Holy Spirit Church.

The plaque was unveiled by Louis Banks in the presence of Braz Gonsalves, Glen Perry, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai, Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik, ward councillor Glen Andrade, SGPDA Chairperson Dr Renuka Da Silva, councillors and citizens.

After unveiling the plaque, Louis Banks remarked that the music community is so proud and felt honoured that Chris Perry has been given the fantastic honour by naming the street after him.

Recalling the rich contribution made by Chris Perry to Goan music, music great Braz Gonsalves said Chris had kept music high in the State. “Chris Perry was a great musician who could write beautiful Konkani songs and in different styles. Nobody could do that type of writing and bring on the stage. He was a great musician and had vast knowledge of music,” Braz added.

Chris Perry’s son, Glen, who has come down to participate in the honour bestowed on his father, expressed his gratitude to the Government of Goa and to Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai for naming the road after his father. “My father was a great musician. I have played with so many musicians, but my father was the best,” he said, while thanking the people of Goa for showering their love and support to his family.

“I travel across the world. A week ago, I was in Iceland, then Argentina and Brazil. Someone asked me about my most favourite place. And, I replied saying that my favourite place is my Goa, it’s so beautiful,” Glen added.

The Deputy Chief Minister told the media that the proposal to name the road after Chris Perry was mooted by citizens like Alberto Colaco and Ernest Moniz and by ward councillor Glen Andrade. “We had accepted the suggestion as a token of our love and recognition of Chris Perry’s contribution to music,” Sardesai said, while declaring that the heritage festival will now become an annual event near Chris Perry’s house behind the Holy Spirit Church.

Later in the evening, Louis Banks, Braz Gonsalves and other musicians performed on Stage 2 at the Goa Heritage festival. Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai and others watched these musicians performing live.
