With its term ending and elections due in early March, the process to re-organise and delimit the 30 wards of The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) was set in motion on Wednesday.
The executive magistrate of Tiswadi was asked by the Urban Development Department to complete the process of rationalisation of the 30 CCP wards by January 19.
The communique to the mamlatdar states that the process of rationalization of wards is to be done based on equitable distribution of population/voters and geographical contiguity.
The Bombay High Court had recently directed the government to notify the delimitation of wards and also the scheme of reservation at least three weeks before it sets in motion the election process after former Margao municipal chief Doris Texeira and another had filed the petition seeking such a direction.
Elections to 11 other municipal bodies whose term ended last year but were deferred due to the pandemic are also to be held simultaneously with the CCP polls.
Currently, the day-to-day affairs of these 11 civic bodies are being managed by bureaucrats appointed by the State government as Administrators.
Babush to field 80% new faces
Panaji MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate on Wednesday said 80 per cent of the candidates in his panel for the CCP elections will be "new faces".
He said, sitting Mayor Uday Madkaikar will be replaced with the latter's son.
