Demand to accomodate daily wage workers on outskirts of Margao grows

MARGAO

With the migrant daily wage labourers cleared from the stretch of road behind the Margao Municipal building, thanks to the Margao police, voices of accommodating these labourers on the outskirts of the city have come up in certain quarters and ensure that the action does not deny these workers their livelihood.

Strict action by the Margao Police over the last few days has cleared the nuisance created by these labourers along the entire road behind the MMC building. The action has also put an end to the activity of selling food items to these labourers by unscrupulous food supplies in most unhygienic conditions.

City-based doctor, Dr Venkatesh Hegde, who has been pursuing the matter with the various authorities, including the police and Margao Municipal Council to initiate action against the menace of labourers, said these labourers used to spit at the place. “We need to save our society from TB and swine flu which spreads by spitting”, Dr Hegde said.

Dr Hegde, however, pointed out that while the police action is welcome, the labourers will loose their daily bread since no contractor will engage them on daily wage as they are no longer seen around the area.

To tide over the problem, keeping in the mind the interest of the society and the livelihood of these labourers, Dr Hegde has suggested to the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Municipal Council and the concerned parties to urgently provide these labourers some space outside the city. Dr Hegde along with many others, including Vinay Alve, Shantanu Ranade, Sudin Sambari, Shripad Rao, Narayan Shanbag and Ashok Kankonkar, had participated in Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Art of Living ‘Clean India Project’ behind the Municipal building, which was left dirty by hundreds of labourers standing on the road and awaiting work.
