PANAJI:

The demolition of the building in the Panaji market which was sealed by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) about a month ago due to safety concerns is unlikely to happen in a hurry although the civic body's council meeting last week had resolved to demolish it.

CCP sources said, the matter is sub-judice after some of the tenants operating shops there approached the court and unless the matter is finalised by the court they cannot go ahead with the demolition.

The building adjacent to Falcon Apartments on the eastern edge of the Panaji municipal market area has been cordoned off with fibre sheets.

The action was taken after a structural stability report from the Goa Engineering College's civil engineering department deemed it unsafe.

Meanwhile, temporary sheds being constructed in a space elsewhere in the market complex are nearing completion. CCP sources said, meat stall owners displaced following the demolition of the old market building adjacent the fish market will be accommodated there.

The Supreme Court had directed that the displaced meat stall owners be rehabilitated.
