"The drainages in Wards 2 and 4 are not desilted and water stagnation is seen at many places. This is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes," he added and called upon the panchayat to desilt the drains at the earliest.
Sources within Betki PHC, however, informed that dengue is caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito which breeds in clean water. "Therefore, the residents have to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that water is not collected in coconut shells, vases, unused tyres, plastic bottles, etc, where such mosquitoes breed," a health worker informed.

When contacted, the panchayat authorities informed that this year they could not undertake desilting of drains as the tender for the same has been held up for want of technical sanction.
"This year, we have also been asked to a submit drainage plan, which was not required before," the authorities added while explaining the delay in getting the desilting tender passed.
