Accusing the BJP of double standards and having done grave injustice to her work, Savitri Kavlekar, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar, resigned as vice president of the BJP Mahila Wing and from the primary membership of the party.

Announcing her resignation at a news conference in Sanguem immediately after the BJP announced the candidature of former MLA Subhash Phaldessai from Sanguem constituency, Savitri also said she would contest as an independent candidate.

“The BJP has done grave injustice to me and my supporters who have been working tirelessly to campaign with me since the last few months,” said Savitri.

“It has also been double standards by the BJP, as it has denied me the party ticket while simultaneously allotting party tickets to a husband-wife duo in Taleigao and Panaji as well as in Valpoi and Poriem.” “The BJP had assured us the party ticket all this while and by denying the ticket at the last minute, all of us are deeply saddened and pained. My supporters now want me to contest as an independent from Sanguem constituency,” she added.

Besides, Savitri Kavlekar, a large number of BJP workers from Sanguem also resigned as primary members of BJP and pledged their support to Savitri, who will now contest as an independent.

Sanguem Councillors Meshu Da Costa and Sangameshwar Naik accused the BJP of hurting the sentiments of a woman aspirant who, they claimed, had been assured the party ticket.

“The party has made a big mistake while allotting the party ticket to defeated former MLA Subhash Phaldessai from Sanguem,” said Da Costa.

Da Costa and others have assured maximum votes from Sanguem town area to Savitri Kavlekar in the upcoming elections and assured to create history by getting Savitri elected as the first woman MLA from Sanguem.

Other party leaders, Sadanand Gaude, Navnath Naik, Chandan Unandkar and Mahesh Gaonkar, also voiced similar views at the news conference.
