As Curtorim found no mention in the list of candidates declared by the BJP on Thursday noon, questions were raised in the constituency and outside whether the BJP will extend support to three-time former MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who is all set to contest the seat as an Independent.
BJP State President Sadanand Tanavade was categorical in saying though Reginaldo had approached the BJP for outside support from the BJP, the ruling party has decided not to support any individual or party, but to field party candidate in the ensuing polls.
Tanavade’s announcement should hopefully put to rest all speculations that the BJP might extend support to Reginaldo Lourenco in Curtorim. In fact, even the BJP workers from Curtorim were left to wonder whether the party has decided otherwise given that the party had unveiled candidates in the remaining seven seats in Salcete.
“The BJP has decided to contest the coming polls by taking the people of all religions and caste together. Hence, we have decided not to support Independents or candidates on political banners, but to field candidates in all the 40 seats,” he added.
