Desecration of crosses in Salcete taluka came back to haunt the men-in-uniform as unknown miscreants vandalised the Holy Cross near the St Cajetan Chapel at Barebhat-Raia.
This is perhaps the first Holy Cross to be desecrated in Salcete after the Goa police claimed that it had solved the host of desecration cases reported in the taluka after the arrest of Francis Pereira. However, almost all the cases registered against Francis, however, failed to pass the legal test and he was acquitted in all the cases, barring one.
The incident at Raia came to light on Tuesday evening when local residents found the cross located on the hillock desecrated and broken into pieces. Locals believe that the cross might have been vandalised by the miscreants on Monday night before it came to light on Tuesday evening.
Following a complaint lodged by the President of the Chapel Committee Rumaldo Gonsalves with the Maina-Curtorim police, a forensic team descended at the spot to carry out investigations. The team was seen at the spot till late Tuesday night as part of the investigations.
Investigation officer, PSI Edwin Dias told the media that a complaint to this effect was lodged with the police on Tuesday evening by Rumaldo Gonsalves. “The police had rounded up three persons as suspects, who were working at a nearby site, but were let off after interrogations,” the PSI said.
