Claiming that people would find it difficult to immerse Ganesh idols in the heavily silted Tar river in Mapusa, former State Shiv Sena chief Ramesh Naik on Monday threatened to block the Tar bridge if authorities failed to desilt the Tar river before Ganesh Chaturthi. He was speaking to reporters while inspecting the Tar river at Mapusa.
Expressing displeasure with the State government for ignoring the immersion site at Tar river, Naik said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the cleaning up of the river Ganges through the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, but the Mapusa Municipal Council and the State government do not have time to clean the Tar river. If authorities do not de-silt the Tar river, Mapusa residents will be forced to block the Tar bridge,” warned Naik.
A resident, Rohidas Shirodkar, said Mapusa residents are forced to immerse
Ganesh idols in the mud during low tides.
“When there is high tide, idols can be immersed easily but during low tide, the idols are back on land. The huge idol of the Mapusa Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav will face severe problems during immersion in the Tar river.”
“We have also submitted a memorandum to MMC chairperson in this matter, failing which we will block the Tar bridge,” warned Shirodkar.
