Despite MMC ban, vendors freely use plastic bags at fair

MARGAO
Margao Municipal Council's grandiose plan to ban use of plastic bags at the Old market feast fair was left much to be desired with vendors freely using plastic on day one of the seven-day fair, which began on Friday.
While banners put up by the Municipal body appeared at the fair, lack of awareness coupled with the failure to provide alternatives put spokes in the entire exercise.
When The GOAN team visited the fair in the evening, they came across vendors freely using the plastic bags to wrap the goods.
/>When The GOAN called up the MMC Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes to shed light on the efficacy of the plastic ban at the fair, he said the MMC market inspectors were on the job in the morning to enforce the plastic ban.
"In the morning, we had a good experience with the market inspectors educating the vendors. The inspectors will be told to crack a whip against the unscrupulous vendors from tomorrow,"
he said.
The Chief Offficer said the MMC is committed to ensure that old market fair is plastic free this time round.
