Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat sought to downplay the rebellion brewing in his camp over the post of chairperson in the Margao Municipal Council which was scalped by a candidate from Goa Forward supremo Vijai Sardesai’s camp. Digambar said he would talk to the councillors over the issue, asserting that Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai was not ready to concede the post to the Model Margao nominee.
Reminding that he and his Fatorda counterpart had forged a pre-poll alliance, Digambar said it is but natural that the panel winning the largest number of seats gets the first preference to occupy the post. He, however, was quick to remind that unlike in 2015, it has been agreed upon to rotate the post amongst the alliance partners, with a term of 15 months.
“I will talk to the councillors who have aired their grievances and explain to them the circumstances”, he said.
He added: “An impression is being created that I did not insist on the chairperson’s post for my councillors first. I did take up the issue with the Fatorda MLA, but his argument was that since he had nine councillors, there’s pressure on him from his councillors that the post should not be conceded to Model Margao.”
