Minister of State for Tourism and Port, Shipping and Waterways Shripad Naik on Monday said disaster management needs to be modernised in order to tackle disasters such as the devastating floods in the State that occurred last week.
He also informed that a report on the flood-related damages would be prepared in the next two days and submitted to the Central government for immediate relief to the victims.
Speaking after inspecting the flood-affected areas at Pali-Bicholim to take stock of the situation, Naik said it was time to make the disaster management system more efficient.
“The calamity caused by the torrential rains has many reasons besides nature and it is necessary to think deeply about the modernisation of disaster management in order to tackle such situations,” said Naik.
He was moved by the extent of damages at Bhamai, Rumad, Khajan, Tale Wada, Tarelat, Maina and other places.
“There is a need for an in-depth study for the cause of natural calamities. Rivers and streams are muddy and need to be cleaned. There is no space for drainage of water and there is a need to improve the drainage system,” he said.
Among the officials accompanying the Union minister included Deputy Collector Deepak Vaigankar, Gopal Surlakar and Sarpanch Prashila Gawande.
