MARGAO
The Colva panchayat on Saturday sent a stern message to the bulk waste generators, including the commercial establishments and residential housing societies to hand over their waste to approved waste contractors before the Panchayat starts to clamp down on erring establishments.
The Colva panchayat on Saturday held a sensitisation workshop in a bid to bring bulk waste generators, including commercial establishments and housing societies, in the tourist village under its lens to ensure they hand over and dispose of their waste only with approved waste contractors.
The Panchayat headed by Sarpanch Suzie Fernandes roped in environmentalist Clinton Vaz to sensitise the bulk waste generators. Addressing the owners of commercial establishments and housing societies, Sarpanch Suzie said the Colva panchayat has given the contract to Clinton Vaz to collect dry waste from the residential houses. She, however, pointed out that the bulk waste generators have not been covered by Vaz since they have been disposing of the waste through their own set of contractors.
“We have advised the bulk waste generators that they should dispose of their waste only through approved contractors. They can ink agreement either with Clinton Vaz or any other approved contractor to ensure the waste is being collected and disposed of as per the laid down guidelines."
She added: “The Panchayat has decided to tackle the waste problem head-on. There are complaints that waste is being dumped alongside the roads. We have compiled a list of bulk waste generators and efforts will be made to ensure they hand over the waste to approved contractors”.
Clinton Vaz said the programme will help the bulk waste generators as well as the panchayat members to get a better picture of waste collection and disposal.
