Highlighting the importance of imparting quality education to students of government and municipal schools in the State, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Friday said he has taken the initiative to restore government schools in Vasco through CSR funds.
Salkar was speaking to reporters after jointly launching the refurbished Municipal School along with Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, Chief Officer Jayant Tari, Councillor Shami Salkar and the Chairman of the MMC School Sub Committee Yatin Kamurlekar.
"This is the only municipal school in Goa which has been present in the MMC building for several years and has now been refurbished while restoring the original heritage structure. We have taken the restoration of government schools in Vasco under CSR activities because government schools and municipal schools have students from poor families and lower middle-class sector,” said Salkar.
“We want to impart quality education to all schools, especially municipal and government schools, by giving them smart classes and laboratories, etc. on priority."
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar said the municipal school was established in 1960.
"Many students have become persons of repute. We had to shift the school to a different location after students faced inconvenience with leaking roofs and lack of facilities like proper ventilation. The entire school has been refurbished and shifted back to the MMC building," said Amonkar.
MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the MMC had passed a resolution to offer monetary support to the school.
"We offer monetary assistance to the school and we have passed a resolution to increase the monetary fund from the previous Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh per year. We will also offer them an additional Rs 1.2 lakh that they need for the blackboards and other equipment in the school to improve the quality of education," said Rodrigues.
Councillor Shami Salkar said it was a matter of pride that the municipal school had managed to always secure a success rate of over 90 per cent and added that it was the responsibility of the MMC to maintain the school.
Municipal High School Chairman and Councillor Yatin Kamurlekar said the school has been shifted back to the MMC building after a gap of around 2 years.
"The school was shifted to Mata School premises in Baina and this caused inconvenience to students and their parents because the school timings were changed from morning to evening.”
“We have brought the school back to its original location and the school has been refurbished with good equipment as well," said Kamurlekar.
