The proposed closure/diversion of NH-66 for the elevated corridor construction work in Porvorim has been postponed.
Director General of Police Alok Kumar inspected the highway near the Socorro old bazaar junction and Teen Building in Porvorim on Tuesday. SP (Traffic) Rahul Gupta, North Goa SP Akshak Kaushal, Traffic Police DySP Siddhant Shirodkar, Porvorim Police Inspector Rahul Parab and Traffic Police Inspector Sanjit Kandolkar were present during the inspection.
In addition, IGP Omvir Singh Bishnoi chaired a meeting with South Goa SP Sunita Sawant and North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal at the office of the North Goa Superintendent of Police.
The National Highways Authority of India had made preparations to begin the construction of the elevate corridor from Socorro old bazaar junction to Teen Building Junction. In this regard, the PWD had also issued a notification to divert traffic at both junctions via the service roads.
DGP Alok Kumar sought information from police officials regarding the impact of traffic during the construction of the elevated corridor.
It was pointed out that the Porvorim Traffic Cell does not have the required manpower to regulate the traffic during the construction of the elevated corridor.
The DGP was informed that an additional 100-150 police personnel are required to regulate traffic on this highway during construction work.
The officials informed the DGP and the IGP that a notification to divert traffic on the route between Banda-Dodamarg and Bicholim would have to be issued through the Sindhudurg District Collector, while a notification to divert traffic on the route between South Goa and Chorla Ghat would have to be issued through the Belagavi District Collector.
During the meeting, police officers also expressed the opinion that the construction of the flyover should be undertaken only after proper planning of vehicular traffic.
Traffic police is expected to conduct a trial run this week, with a final decision pending an upcoming meeting with authorities.
