Diwali shopping bonanza for Goans visiting Belagavi
Belagavi market is all set to welcome Goan customers with festive offers, deals and discounts.

BELAGAVI

While the world goes to Goa, Goans visit Belagavi. This is an age-old perception that exists since times immemorial. Be it during the Portuguese era or post-liberation, Belagavi and Goa share a bond that has strengthened over the years.

The bond of friendship is so old that even today many traders from yesteryears share many nostalgic memories of the past. The friendship that began since times immemorial kept on maturing and became more intimate despite heavy restrictions and prohibitions.

The same bonds of intimate friendship and bonding has flourished even more in the post-liberation era.

“Those days, Goans were depending on goods and services from Belagavi perhaps since the Portuguese ruled Goa for over 450 years. However, in 1955, India even imposed an economic blockade on Goa due to which supply of goods and services became increasingly difficult,” a veteran businessman said reminiscing the nostalgic memories.

“On the other side of the border, the Portuguese soldiers used to identify any Indian entering Goa border as a nationalist and there was always a fear of getting arrested or tormented. Hence many times we had to literally smuggle goods in Goa,” the businessman said.

Many veterans in Belagavi also shared the role they played during Goa’s Liberation, as to how they used to enter Goa in the guise of traders, and how the womenfolk collected bhaji-bhakri etc. for those freedom fighters who were engaged in a Satyagraha against the Portuguese.

With today’s flourishing relations, trade between Belagavi and Goa is based on a strong foundation of friendship and brotherhood which was laid during the pre-liberation era.

Thanks to these connections and ancestral roots, Belagavi has today become the most preferred shopping and a pleasant weekend for the people across Goa.

With the arrival of Diwali festival, Belagavi market is all set to cater to the needs of Goans.
