A Round Table discussion on road safety and traffic management in Margao has called for a dedicated city bus service, similar to that of Panaji, by the Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL) in collaboration with the Margao Municipal Council. Participants highlighted that introducing city bus services could address numerous traffic and safety issues currently plaguing the area.
The Round Table Discussion (RTD) was held at the Seminar Hall of Government College Borda Margao during the 13th State Road Safety Week, observed from October 14 to 20, 2024, organised by the Consumer Welfare Cell of the college in partnership with GOACAN. Participants emphasised the importance of creating awareness among students about public transport and traffic management. They suggested establishing road safety patrols and enrolling as traffic wardens, as well as organising regular interactions between student councils and government authorities.
Additionally, the need to popularise the use of the PWD app for reporting potholes and road issues was discussed. Volunteers for the Village Panchayat Road Safety & Traffic Management Committees in Salcete Taluka were encouraged, alongside the creation of educational materials in local languages addressing the dangers of reckless and drunk driving, the penalties for underage driving, and the importance of using ISI-marked helmets and seat belts.
Discussions also highlighted the necessity of a police crackdown on drunk drivers and conductors, abusive behaviour toward female students, denial of the 50% bus concession, and overcrowding on buses.
Activities will continue leading up to the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 17 and World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26.
