Promising all out support and assistance to the Margao Municipal Council to put in place a full-proof system for segregation of waste at source by January 31, Director of Municipal  Administration R Menaka has assured to take up the issue of waste coming into Margao city from  Salcete villages with the Director of Panchayats and the Chairman of Solid Waste Management Corporation.

Addressing the stakeholders on solid waste management at the MMC hall on Monday, the DMA further said the format for the collection of data on the number of households, housing societies, bulk waste generators and commercial establishments will be dispatched within two days and the review meeting will be held on January 14.

“We have taken serious note of the MSW 16 rules, which clearly define the roles of the local bodies and the state government. We may be late, but we have to make a beginning. The NGT has taken cognizance of the state of affairs at the Sonsodo site. We have to take steps to ensure 100 per cent collection of segregated waste,” she said.

Saying the MMC has promised to extend the door-to-door waste segregation to all the wards, the DMA underscored the role of the councillors in getting the inputs of the waste generators.

“Based on the data collection, the government will help the civic body in toning up the infrastructure facilities, such as vehicles, receptacles etc. This exercise can be even funded as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission,” she said.

On waste finding its way into the city from the village, pegged at around 10 tonnes a day, the DMA said the issue will be discussed with the Panchayat Director and SWMC Chairman to explore the possibility of commencing door-to-door waste collection in these villages.

“I am confident a system will be in place by end of the month. We will address the pitfalls that come in our way,” she added.
