PANAJI: If you are caught drunk driving or jumping a red light over the next two weeks, you could end up having your driving licence suspended for a period of three months.
The Goa Police will begin a drive starting today (Friday, April 15) as per directions from the Supreme Court, the police after challaning a violator will send a report to the Regional Transport Officials (RTO) to suspend the driving licence of the violator for a period of three months, the traffic officials have said.
Violations which fall in his category include driving under the influence of alcohol, jumping a red light, carrying passengers in a goods carrier as well as rash and negligent driving.
“We will send the report to the RTO. They will take a decision on whether to suspend the licence or take other appropriate action,” police officials have said.
As part of the drive starting on Friday, besides the above offences, the police have said that they will book traffic offenders concentrating largely on driving without licence, minors driving, driving without helmet, using mobile phone while driving, etc.
The drive will include city areas as well as village roads and state highways where wearing helmets has been made compulsory since April this year.
“This has been done with a view to reduce traffic accidents and to ensure road safety so that accidents are reduced and precious lives are saved. The Traffic police will focus on quality prosecutions. The drive will continue till the end of the month,” the traffic police said in a statement.
The police have warned that if minors are found driving, action would be initiated against the registered owners of vehicles.
