Appealing to students not to bow down to peer pressure and consume drugs, Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has also advised parents to keep watch on activities of their children.
He was speaking at a programme organised by Porvorim Rising and Progressive Active Citizens in association with Goa Police and the panchayats of Penha-de-Franca, Socorro and Salvador-do-Mundo at Porvorim to create awareness about drugs.
Students of Holy Family high school, Dona Leonor Memorial High school, Sanjay school, Government high school (Alto-Betim), L D Samant Memorial high school and Chubby Cheeks Spring Valley high school participated at the event.
“Always resist peer pressure and say ‘No to Drugs and Yes to Life’,” Khaunte advised students at the function.
Stating that teachers and parents are responsible to shape the lives of children, Khaunte said most parents go to work and have little time for communication with their children.
“It is responsibility of parents to keep watch on activities of their children and spend some time with them on returning home. They should not impose their ambitions on children, but allow them the freedom to choose careers of their choice so that they do not work under stress,” said Khaunte.
Superintendent of Police (Narcotics) Umesh Gaonkar informed that drugs have the power to destroy the youth, as it thrills the mind but kills the body. “Goa is wrongly being publicised as a destination of drugs. Hardly 10% of the Goan youth are involved in drug activities,” said SP Gaonkar.
“While Goa Police has been successful in curbing drug menace to a large extent, parents should monitor the activities of their children. If they find changes in appetite or sleep pattern, sudden weight loss or gain, sudden mood swings, irritability or angry outburst in their children, they should act immediately,” he added.
Earlier, Aparna Prabhu welcomed the gathering, while PSI Manjunath Naik presented a film to show the ill-effects of drugs on the human body.
