Making a fervent plea to the people not to panic over the coronavirus, South Goa district Collector, Ajit Roy on Thursday said that maintaining good personal hygiene  should suffice to control the spread of the virus instead of creating a panicky situation over public gatherings.

The district Collector chaired an urgent meeting with top officials from the departments of Health, BDOs, Municipal Chief Officer in the district Collectorate, South on Thursday evening to review the situation.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Roy said people should not panic and continue with the normal  life. “As long as there are no positive cases, there should not be any problem on large gatherings,” he said.

While stressing on the need to maintain hygiene etiquette, Roy said good lifestyle will boost the immune system of the people, which will go a long way in fighting the virus. “People should have a good lifestyle.

“They should sleep well and maintain their stress levels. Half an hour of physical activity will boost our immune system,” he said, adding this is the message that has been conveyed to the stakeholders at the meeting.

The district Collector said Goa is fortunate that not a single positive case of coronavirus has been  reported in the state. ‘This has been made possible because of the proactive steps taken by the  administration, including the surveillance system and mass awareness exercise taken up by the  stakeholders such as the BDOs and Chief officers’, he said.

To a question, the Collector said people should be made aware of the fact that they should report to the health authorities if they have symptoms of normal flu, including respiratory problem. “We are fortunate that not a single positive case of coronavirus has been reported in the state”, he added.

The health authorities, including Hospicio Medical Superintendent, Dr Ira Almeida explained the steps taken by the hospital to meet any situation.

She said Hospicio has set up six-bed wards at the TB hospital and two more wards are in the pipeline. She further said that the Hospicio has opened a dedicated OPD No 11 for the screening of coronavirus suspects.
