The Directorate of Panchayats (DoP) has directed the Calangute panchayat to de-seal four clubs, even as the panchayat plans to resume its drive against clubs and commercial establishments allegedly operating without valid permissions from the panchayat and other competent authorities.
The panchayat had sealed eight clubs and commercial establishments last week before suspending the drive on Monday. It will resume the action from Thursday.
Asked about the DoP’s direction to de-seal four clubs, panchayat member Sequeira said the order had not yet been checked as the panchayat office was closed for the Eid holiday.
Meanwhile, former MLA Agnelo Fernandes questioned the panchayat’s role and demanded action against alleged dance bars across the Calangute tourist belt, rather than only
in Tito’s Lane.
“Although the panchayat claims to have sealed dance bars, residents have said that many others in the area are still open. The administration should take similar action against all of them instead of targeting just one area,” Fernandes said.
