Alleging that the government is delaying the implementation of the Motor Vehicle Act 2018 on flimsy grounds, the Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) has demanded immediate implementation of the law.
The organization for the disabled in a letter to the Chief Secretary has also warned to approach the court if the government fails to implement the same before Statehood Day i.e. May 30, 2021.
"We are disappointed to note that the State government has time and again postponed the implementation of the Motor Vehicle Act 2018 on flimsy grounds despite the increase in road accidents in Goa leading to loss of lives and limbs, and increase in people becoming disabled for life," says the memorandum.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 mandates that the State government takes steps for the prevention of disabilities.
DRAG has also demanded that their organisation should be considered as stakeholders in the transport sector as it represents people with disabilities in Goa and India, is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and has implemented the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 which mandates many provisions related to transportation of persons with disability.
'App-based taxis should be allowed'
PANAJI: The Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) has also demanded that app-based taxis should not be scrapped and more companies like Ola, Uber, Ezy Mov should be allowed to operate in Goa as they provide wheelchair-accessible facilities in their vehicles which is beneficial for persons with disability and the elderly, which constitutes 10% of the Goan population.
