Besides the Margao head post office, POs of Dramapur, Cavelossim, Colva and Macazana have been shortlisted in South Goa for the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), a banking concept launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the country on Saturday.
While the Head Post Office at Margao will be the main branch to handle the banking operations, the remaining four post offices at Cavelossim, Dramapaur, Macazana and Colva have been given the status as access branches for the moment.
And if the postal authorities are to be believed, all the 95 post offices in South Goa district will get the status as a bank by the end of the current calendar year in December.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the India Post Payments Bank on Saturday, South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar launched the postal bank here in the presence of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
Rakesh O P, IPPB, told the media that all the 95 post offices spread across South Goa will start banking services by December-end. “IPPB is nothing, but mobile banking. Citizens can open an account in their homes. The postman will deliver the withdrawal amount right at the doorsteps of the people,” he said.
In his address, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said the postman used to once deliver money orders to the doorsteps of the people. He said that when the banking sector finds itself in a crisis, it is heartening to note that the postal department has come out with this banking service.
South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar said the banking concept at the POs was launched by the Prime Minister to take banking to the doorsteps of the common man, especially in the remote areas of the country.
