The old market area of the city witnessed an uproar after Margao Municipal workers went about dismantling a shed erected without permission by the owners.
As the Chief Officer, Sidhivinayak Naik justified the action saying the action is part of an ongoing drive against illegalities, the owners cried foul saying the action is discriminatory while demanding justice.
When the Municipal inspector Sheikh Hasina along with MMC workers descended at the old market dismantle the temporary shed, there was stiff resistance from the owners, who demanded that the Civic body employ uniform yardstick to all the establishments. As the owners raised an uproar, the Fatorda police made their presence felt to provide protection to the workers to discharge their duties.
Heated exchanges ensued between the owners and the Chief Officer over the action with Chief Officer Naik justifying the action saying the shed was erected without permission, even as the owners demanded justice.
“The action is part of an ongoing drive against illegalities,” the Chief Officer told the media. When asked why the Civic body has not initiated similar action against other establishments, he pointed out that action will soon follow against all the
illegalities.
The owners, however, accused the Chief Officer for turning a blind eye to the illegalities in the Old market, alleging that the Civic body targeted only select establishments.
